INQUESTS - An inquest was held yesterday afternoon, by the Bourough Coroner (Mr Hawkes), at Moor Street, relative to the death of Edward Gould (41), carter, of Derby Street, who met with his death at the interception department, in Montague Street, on Friday night. James Fancourt, van driver, stated he was proceeding along Montague Street at 11 o'clock on Friday night, when he saw the deceased walking on the left hand side of the street. When witness reached the entrance to the interception department the deceased, who appeared to be drunk, stumbled towards the gates. He next came in contact with his horses legs. At this the horse became fractious, and darting forward knocked Gould down and drew both the off wheels of the cart across his head. Dr. Ravenhill was summoned, and pronounced life to be extinct, deceased's skull having been completely smashed. In answer to the coroner, the witness said there was only one light over the gateway. The jury returned a verdict of "Accidental Death" and recommended that the Town Council should provide better lights in the gateway, and order their drivers to lead their horses whilst passing through the entrance.
