Stole plastic tablecloth from market

An out of uniform policeman, shopping in Halifax Borough Market, yesterday, watched a labourer, Wilfred Keitch, of 35 Pollard Street, Halifax, steal a plastic tablecloth, it was alleged by Mr M Scott (prosecuting) at Halifax Borough Court, today.
Keitch pleaded not guilty to stealing the plastic tablecloth, valued at 3s 11d, from Trevor Fairclough, at stall 123, Borough Market. He was granted a conditional discharge and ordered to pay 15s costs.
Mr Scott said that Constable Alan Norris, of Halifax West Riding Police saw Keitch talking to an assistant at Mr Fairclough's stall. When she turned her back, Keitch picked up the tablecloth - which was wrapped in a transparent bag - and put it in his paper carrier.
Keitch told police he thought he had bought the tablecloth, said Mr Scott.
Keitch told the court that the constable questioned him before he had time to pay for the tablecloth. He told police he thought he had paid for it because he had been drinking.
