SAD STORY AT HALIFAX
A Young Wifes's Troubles
Another sad story of domestic infelicity was told today at the Halifax Borough Police Court. The magistrates present were Mr T S Scarborough (in the chair) Colonel Gray, Messrs R Horsfall, J Garside, W Grabtree, E Marsden, and W H Spencer. The defendant was David William Keitch, a boot maker living in Duke Street. He was summoned for assaulting his wife, on the 14th ins.
The complainant; who supported a bay in her arms, stated that she was 23 years of age, and had been married 16 months, during which period she did not think her husband had come home sober. Three times he had come home "fairly on his hands and knees." He had often Ill used her, and on the day in question she had to search for him at a public house. She found him and he told her his mother had lent him sixpence, but he had had such such a lot of beer that it must have been a very long sixpence. (Laughter) She, however, managed to get 1s. from him If he did not get sufficient drink when out he fetched some home. He threw a chair at her and the baby on the day in question.
Defendant: What did you say to me when I came home?
Complainant: I told you I was sick of seeing you drunk.
The complainant stated that her husband went to a public house where he could get beer on "strap" She belonged to London, and had been a superintendant of canvassers. She met the defendant in Halifax to her sorrow. She admitted that he have her 18s. a week, and said they were both hard working people.
The Chairman: If we dismiss the case will you be a kind husband?
Defendant: Will she be a kind wife?
Eventually the magistrates bound the defendant over to be of good behaviour for three months.
Complainant left the court weeping, and exclaimed, "I don't want to go home with him."
